Gisela Moncada was awarded a UC MEXUS-CONACYT Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2015 and 2016, and also received the Monarch Award for the best postdoctoral proposal submitted to the 2016 competition. Her research explores the food history of Mexico City, looking specifically at food trade during the first half of the 19th century in Mexico. This research examines patterns of food supply, distribution, consumption and regulation in early independent Mexico. It is being performed at UC San Diego under the mentorship of Distinguished Professor of History Eric Van Young and Assistant Professor Matthew Vitz. Gisela’s work sheds light not only on food trade and the transformation of food trade networks in 19th century Mexico, but also on the political and economic growth of Mexico City during this period. She has presented advances in this research at a number of academic forums, conferences and seminars, and will be developing this work for publication.
Moncada has collected extensive material on Mexico City’s food supply chain through visits to the Mexican Archives. In addition, Gisela has consulted the Geisel Library at UC San Diego where there is a Special Collection of Newspaper (Microfilm) from Mexico in the 19th Century. Dr. Moncada authored the book El Sistema de Abasto de Alimentos en la Ciudad de México, 1810-1835 and is currently a member of CONACYT’s National System of Researchers at SNI Level 1.
